ORIENT-EXPRESS HOTELS OPENS NEW LUXURY RESORT IN PERU’S COLCA CANYON

Posted in Peru with tags on February 27, 2008 by The Affluent Page

Orient-Express Hotels Colca Canyon Peru

Orient-Express Hotels announced today that the eagerly awaited Las Casitas del Colca will open April 15, 2008 on a 60-acre estate strewn with cactus and fruit trees and watered by natural springs. This 20-room lodge in Peru’s Colca Canyon will give visitors a rare and special opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Andes. Guests can personally select vegetables for their meals from the extensive garden and prickly pear orchard, and the onsite farm is home to horses, baby alpacas, cows, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits and trout ponds.

All accommodations have been designed to meld with the environment and incorporate natural local materials whenever possible, such as Laja stone from the nearby Arequipa region for all floors and terraces. Each casita’s amenities include heated flooring, a working open fireplace, WIFI Internet access and outside terrace with private heated plunge pool. Bathrooms are accessed through separate dressing rooms and feature large soaking tubs, both indoor and outdoor showers and glass ceilings to encourage guests to lie back and gaze up at the remarkable night sky.

The Spa Samay (meaning ‘rest’ in the ancient Incan language of Quecha) at Las Casitas del Colca has sweeping views of the valley. The spa will feature a sauna, two single treatment rooms, one double treatment room and a treatment suite complete with a soaking tub. A range of treatments inspired by the Andean culture will be offered, using local products from the Colca Valley and the highlands of Peru.

Las Casitas del Colca will employ strict environmental standards to protect the precious ecosystem of the Colca Canyon. Organic refuse will be used as compost for the vegetable garden and farm and waste water will be sent to a treatment plant to ensure that any water released into the environment is 100% clean. In addition, volunteer work can be organized for any guest wishing to be involved in the nearby Mission of Sister Antonia. Sister Antonia, a member of the Order of the Maryknoll, has lived in Peru for 53 years and worked with the Yanque community for over 36 years. The mission operates a soup kitchen in the Yanque marketplace from 5am every morning, providing 600 breakfasts a day to people in need. The mission is run purely on donations from tourists and anonymous benefactors and Las Casitas del Colca aims to assist Sister Antonia in her work.

Las Casitas del Colca is located in the Colca Canyon in Southern Peru, 160 km (100 miles) north of Arequipa. At 3,267m (10,725ft) deep, the Colca Canyon is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and runs a distance of over 100 kilometers. The Colca Canyon is a scenic three-hour drive from Arequipa, passing through a National nature reserve and the alpaca inhabited foothills of the Chachani, Picchu Picchu and El Misti volcanoes.

BANYAN TREE SANYA BRINGS A NEW LEVEL OF SECLUSION TO CHINA’S SOUTH SEA ISLAND

Posted in China with tags , on February 22, 2008 by The Affluent Page
Banyan Tree Hotel and Spa
Singapore-based Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts is pioneering a brand new sub-tropical hideaway on China’s Hainan Island, one hour’s flight south of Hong Kong.

Scheduled for soft opening in April 2008, the exclusive Banyan Tree Sanya Resort and Spa, located at Luhuitou Bay, on the southern coast of Hainan Island, will be the first all-pool villa resort in China and will complement the Group’s two highly-acclaimed properties located in the depths of China’s Yunnan province.

With 49 secluded pool villas set amidst a sculpted tropical lagoon, the resort is designed as an exclusive hideaway; a lavish escape from urban sprawl. It comes with a Banyan Tree Spa and hydrotherapy complex, signature dining outlets, and extensive conference facilities making it an ideal venue for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) events. The highlight however, is the resort’s two Presidential Villa Complexes. Unprecedented in both scale and luxury, these will accommodate heads of state and their entourages, and cater to groups of up to 50 in each private compound.

The resort is located just 30 minutes’ drive from Phoenix International Airport in Sanya. Hainan Island is also connected to the mainland via the Guangdong-Hainan passenger railway link.

Isle of Plenty
Until twenty years ago this relatively unknown island was better known for its palm-fringed beaches, seafood and colourful aboriginal tribes such as the Li minority, just one of over 20 indigenous people who have retained their own forms of unique arts, dance and music. Being blessed with beautiful beaches, a climate described as “the endless summer” and the best air quality in China, Hainan Island quickly grew to fame as a tourism hub. There are also several outlying islands in the vicinity of the main island, making for pleasant day trips, diving excursions, and spectacular photography.

Driven by Design
Designed entirely by Architrave Design and Planning, the in-house architectural division of Banyan Tree, the resort comprises 21 Pool Villas, 16 Deluxe Pool Villas, seven Spa Pool Villas, and five Two-Bedroom Pool Villas, in addition to the two magnificent Presidential Complexes.

The spacious and contemporary pool villas are constructed from local red clay-tiled roofs and black slate-clad walls, combining delightful Chinese details with a distinctive tropical minimalism. The surrounds are fringed by palm trees and lotus ponds, enclosed in a private courtyard abutted by traditional cruciform cross-structural beams. Guests will enjoy bright airy vistas thanks to the use of glass; outside there are impressive lawns, outdoor showers and private jet-pools.

Within the two adjacent Presidential Complexes are two identical Presidential Villas, specially designed to host local and international dignitaries in style. Each Presidential Villa comprises two king-sized bedrooms and four adjacent bedrooms with twin beds, with every amenity including Presidential reception room, Presidential dining room, family room, theatre, games room, private spa suite and gym, as well as the swimming pool, measuring over 300 square metres, with outdoor sunken pavilion and heated jet-pool.

Within the two Presidential Complexes are the entourage living quarters, with guest capacity of 44 and 36 respectively. Each entourage living quarters features its own swimming pool, lounge, buffet area, meeting room, gym, sauna and steam showers. At both Presidential Villa Complexes, comprehensive 24-hour security and valet services are provided for the distinguished guests when in residence.

Treasure Island
Hainan Island has a number of major sites, most of which are centred around its fantastically lush landscape. Tianya Haijiao, or ‘Edge of the Sky, End of the Sea’ is a dazzling cape located just 24km west of the second city of Sanya. It is also home to the South Column Rock featured on China’s two-yuan banknote, a setting that brings together the white sands, turquoise seas, azure blue skies and verdant hills.

Banyan Tree Sanya room rates range from US$1550++ per villa per night. The Presidential Villa Complexes are available at US$21,800++ and US$19,700++ per night. For reservations, please call Banyan Tree Main Reservations at +65 6849 5800. One–stop reservations at the best rates can be made on www.banyantree.com.

Pezula Resort and Spa

Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s most respected international icon – affectionately known by South Africans as “Madiba” – has just wrapped up a 10-day vacation at the country’s Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa, says Keith Stewart, chairman of the Pezula Group.

Mandela and his wife, Gracia Machel – along with Mrs Machel’s daughter and grandchildren – were among the first guests at the resort’s Pezula Castle, an ultra-luxury private mansion on the Indian Ocean’s secluded Noetzie Beach.

“This was a supreme honor for Pezula,” commented Stewart, explaining that the Castle was ideal for the ex-state president’s holiday. Pezula Castle offers complete  security and privacy, and the services of a full-time butler, chef and staff to ensure guests experience every possible luxury.

“In addition,” Stewart continued, “Madiba made use of some of the facilities of Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa, including the private dining room at Zachary’s gourmet restaurant, and he undertook a complete tour of the Pezula development, including the Private Estate and the Field of Dreams sports facility.”

Opened in 2005, Pezula Resort Hotel & Spa is considered Africa’s leading luxury resort, whose 78 guest suites and beachside “castles” are adjacent to the continent’s finest golf course. “Nelson Mandela is a remarkable man and retains a keen interest in people and his surroundings,” Stewart observed, “and our staff fell in love with him.”
